Tire ratings are a very important element of selecting the correct tire for your vehicle. These ratings are speed ratings, which are based on a system that tests tires and determines a safe maximum speed.
Keep in mind that this maximum speed only applies to the test itself, and does not indicate a safe maximum speed for the vehicle. Due to things like vehicle design and weight (not to mention speed limits!), actual vehicle maximum speed will vary.
You’ll want to always stick to the manufacturer recommended speed rating or higher. It’s always ok to go to a higher speed rating, but you’ll never want to go for less.
